Monday, Monday...you gotta get down on Monday.
-said no one, ever. Except me - today!
I'd like to think this isn't your typical Monday because I'm here to show some before and after pictures of what we've been working on in our kitchen! We had this finished in less than 2 weeks and completed it all on our own (minus the backsplash-which our friend did for us and was a huge help!) and we are in fact...drumroll...still married! Our first BIG house project together was a success-we were both on the same page with everything and got.er.done. We are very happy and proud of the results, so we hope you will like them too and maybe this will inspire some of you to paint your kitchen cabinets.
First. A little intro: this isn't our "forever" home, which is why it took us awhile to do this update. We bought this house 3 years ago because we thought it was a great starter home for us where we could still save money and not be house broke, had the perfect amount of space for what we needed, and we loved the finished basement and huge backyard. We still love this house, but ideally we would like to build our own home next. That being said, we both can't believe we waited so long to update our kitchen. We wish we would've done this sooner because we are over the moon happy with the results and now looking back at our old kitchen, it looks so hideous! So, be easy on us.
The pictures really don't do our new kitchen justice...it is exactly what we wanted and the fact that we did it ourselves just makes it that much more rewarding and better.
Time for some BEFORE pictures:
keep in mind I picked the more messy ones that I could find for a more dramatic "before"...
I'd like to think it wasn't always this messy. ;)
and, AFTER (eek!):
{still need to get outlet cover for there obviously}
view from the other side:
I want to keep the decor as simple as possible so I plan on adding just touches of yellow and green in a couple places, like these succulent pots:
Below shows the aftermath of renovations:
a completely empty wine cooler.
*The only thing we did not change (yet) are the appliances and the countertops.
Here's what we did:
-Painted the kitchen cabinets white (paint/primer: Sherwin Williams-Pro Classic in White)
-Replaced the hinges
-Updated the hardware
-Added crown molding
-Added bead board
-Added pendant light
-Added backsplash
-Added chalkboard area
-Painted the kitchen walls (paint color: Olympic - Silver Spoon from Lowe's)
This is a closer picture of the backsplash we used:
We are in LOVE with it. Every little thing. The kitchen is so open and bright!
The only thing left to do is decorate a bit, and wait for the grout on the backsplash to sit for at least a week before we seal it, and then we can wipe it down and clean it. The backsplash will be much more shiny and white after that, but you get the idea here. We also might replace 2 of the front cabinet doors with glass to change it up a bit even more, and if we do that I will post pictures.
Can I also mention how much I am loving the trees in our neighborhood right now?
*If you would like specific steps on how we painted the cabinets, please feel free to email me!
Quick tips: Do not skimp on the paint for the cabinets or the rollers. Get the best. They have specific rollers for cabinets, so use those too. Make sure to sand the cabinets before you prime, and also do a light sanding after you prime.
What do you think of our new white kitchen?
Have you painted kitchen cabinets before? It wasn't as hard as we expected!
It looks awesome girl!
ReplyDeleteWoot!!! I remember doing our kitchen over and how much fun it was!!! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAh, I absolutely love this! And after hearing all about it on Twitter, I just couldn't wait to see photos. YOU GO GIRL!

Wow, looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteOH MY WORD!!! This is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! :) :) I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh it looks so good Katie!!! You guys did an awesome job and I am totally envious of your impressive DIY skills. I am thinking I need to do this asap. Thank you for the inspiration. I may be getting a hold of you on how to heck to paint the cabinets. Love it all!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt looks SO good!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! Looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWow, you did an awesome job! I love the color and the backsplash is awesome.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your new white kitchen! The wall color is great, too! I'm really checking out your hardware...love it. We still have no hardware on our drawers/cabinets, and we've been there three years. I also love the chalkboard and I'm totally into the glass cabinet doors idea. My friend recently built a new house and they have a frosty glass door on their pantry, which I am in love with! Ahhh...I need some DIY in my life but my husband will shoot me if I start it in our kitchen, ha! Congrats, it looks great!!
ReplyDeletePS, with your awesome new deck and sparkly new kitchen, why would you want to leave that house!? :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I love the back splash! And who would have thought a paint job on the cabinets would make things look so much better! I'm very impressed, ya'll did a great job!
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome! The white is just so crisp and makes it look so open!
ReplyDeleteHow did you do the chalkboard thing?
You know what's funny? The first thing I thought you changed were your countertops, because the changes you've made made your kitchen SO much brighter that they looked brand new! You guys did a great job! And congrats on still being married - my hubs and I have been renovating for 4 years and it is... challenging, haha!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the white kitchen! It looks fabulous. Great job :)
ReplyDeleteSUCH a beautiful transformation! I love super crisp white. I would like that, and really really dark floors in my "forever house" too!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind some advice? if you're trying to keep the costs of renovations down (to make it worth it on resale, eventually).. I'm not even sure I'd touch the countertop! Ours was about $1,200 and we have less than you, but with the new cabinets and gorgeous backsplash, the laminate you have isn't that offensive at all! It matches really well! Of course if you want to do it for yourself, by all means..haha.. but I think you'd sell it no problem with those updates.
we did a similar mini-face lift, added some cabinets, new countertops and backsplash: http://kellybjd.blogspot.com/search/label/before%20and%20after
I LOVE the way it turned out too!
It looks fantastic! you guys did an awesome job! seems like a big undertaking so I'm glad to see you kicked back with a glass (or bottle) of wine ; )
ReplyDeleteThat's so much work! Gorgeous transformation Katie... really impressive and beautiful!

ReplyDeleteWow Katie it looks great! Looks like a brand new kitchen! The crown molding and painting totally transformed the cabinets and makes them look 10X more expensive haha! Love the back splash and bead boards too! So impressed ya'll did most of it by yourselves!!
ReplyDeleteKatie, this looks absolutely INCREDIBLE. Bravo to you guys for this amazing remodel! I think the backsplash and crown moulding make such a difference. This is going to get pinned big-time!

It looks so good Katie!!! Isn't it nice to enjoy something that you put all your hard work into? and uhmm where can I get a wine cooler like that, I need one..like now!
ReplyDeleteWOW! It looks fantastic! And I have to say, I'm insanely jealous. Can I just move into your kitchen? Just the kitchen! Haha.

It's just lovely Kelly! Super chic and shiny :) I love the view from the kitchen into the backyard with the little pumpkins. It makes me truly miss my house back home :( My dumb apartment just isn't the same for decorating. Hmrph.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so great! I really would LOVE to update our kitchen, but we're renting.... and while our landlords would probably jump at the chance to get some upgrades with no work involved (jerks), we don't really want to put in the work! Plus, our cabinets and countertop are so bottom-of-the-barrel slumlord status that they'd have to be ripped out anyway... and that'd be a bigger job than we'd like right now :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. Good for you for doing it yourself!
ReplyDeleteOh wow I love love love it! The chalkboard cabinet is amazing and I think the countertops work great with the entire design. Personally, I wouldn't replace them if ya'll are planning on selling because then the new owners would be able to customize to their liking! :)

Oh my gosh it looks WONDERFUL!!!! I love it!!! We did a quick and kind of shoddy re-do of our kitchen when we bought our [also not forever] home, and seeing your photos makes me want to go get to work in my kitchen!!! Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks great!! We just redid our kitchen and painted our cabinets white too. It was a PITA but so worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI love the new kitchen! Looks great! I am a huge advocate for a chalkboard in the kitchen, I have one and we love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am desperate to give my kitchen a make-over; for the second time.

ReplyDeleteCan I ask how you did your chalkboard? I just made a chalkboard and no matter what I do, it is always cloudy. I'm not sure if it's the paint brand or what, but I want mine to look as nice as yours!

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to get a step by step on painting your cabinets. Ours are a little darker of a wood than yours were, and we plan on painting them white as well!!
ReplyDeleteYou guys did such a good job!
It looks amazing! Did you guys do the backsplash yourself? If so, was it difficult? My husband and I just moved into a new (new for us ;) home that is in serious need of a kitchen makeover!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! :)
thanks!! Our friend did our backsplash for us. It didn't look that difficult, but I would just research a lot beforehand if you did it yourself! Or maybe ask a friend who has done it..much easier ;)
DeleteThis is GORGEOUS! I love love love your Reno. :)
ReplyDeleteI've been dying to paint our cabinets. We have a really ugly 1970s kitchen and yours is pretty much my dream kitchen: super light and airy. It looks fantastic!
